Paul’s letter to the Colossians was one of encouragement and instruction. The church in Colossae had two influences to resist: mystical polytheism and observance of the laws of the torah. They had one group trying to hold them to legalistic systems and another group trying to convince them to hedge their bets with other gods—as Jesus might not be enough to save them.
Paul set out to methodically reject any notion of the insufficiency of Christ Jesus. He reveals the true nature of Christ as the, “head of all” and our new reality as being filled with Christ. Paul writes in Colossians 2:10 “and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.” (ESV) Through our union with Christ Jesus we are brought to fullness, and no part of our existence is left untouched.
