A NEW MIND

Pastor Ed

SCRIPTURE: Romans 12
- It’s not enough to know the things of God, you have to put them into practice.

ROMANS 12:1-8 [TNIV]
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is true worship.
Text notes:.
• “Therefore” denotes Paul’s transition to practical advice.
• Paul urges, as a coach
• Physical obedience is part of true worship

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Text Notes:
• The “world/age” is trying to mold you into it’s shape
• Instead be transformed like a butterfly
• Set your mind on the first things, reorient your compass

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
Text Notes:
• Again, Paul reminds us to begin with humility

For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
Text Notes:
• Each must exercise his or her gifts without envying or looking down on those with other gifts.
• Some gifts area”spotlight” gifts and others are “behind the scenes” gifts. All are equally important.

LESSONS FROM THE TEXT

• The world/age is not neutral; it is trying to shape you.
• Transformation requires a discipline of sacrifice
• Lean into your gifts

HOW WILL THEY HEAR?

Pastor Ed
Scripture: Romans 10

Text Notes:
• Zeal is good, but it must be directed by truth.
• The righteousness based on the Law is impossible
• The righteousness based on faith is very accessible
• A human messenger is essential to bring the truth to all

Lessons:
• God intends for the Gospel to be spread to all people everywhere
• Be passionate about the message

Matthew 24:14 [ESV] And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

GOD OVER ALL

Pastor Ed Ezaki

Roman 9

In Romans 9-11: What should we as Christians think or feel about the Jewish People?

Text Notes:

• Paul is heartbroken over Israel
• Nevertheless, as Paul introduces he subject, he makes the strongest statement about Jesus Christ yet, calling Him “God Over All”

• Paul notes that the history of Israel is one of continuously narrowing the chosen people

• Paul shows that the hardening of Israel allowed for the inclusion of the Gentiles.

Lessons from the text

• From the Jewish perspective, the problem with the Gospel is that too many receive salvation, not too few.

• As Gentile believers, we should be grateful to have been included.

There Will Be Singing

Pastor Ed Ezaki

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 35

Text Notes
• The prophecy begins with nature rejoicing
• Ironically, the first promise is the farthest from fulfillment.
vv. 1,2: creation’s restoration

• Those who are afraid because they have been mistreated will be comforted
vv. 3,4: God will come and save us

• Disabled people will be restored to wholeness.
vv. 5,6

• God will make a safe and happy way to return home
vv. 7-10

There is reason to rejoice the Bible says.

LESSON FROM THE TEXT:
• God promises joy to come!

PRINCE OF PEACE

SCRIPTURE READING: Is. 11:1-10 [ESV]

1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
2 And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.
6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.
7 The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den.
9 They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
10 In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples-of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

Text Notes:
• Isaiah: Jerusalem prophet in 750 years before Christ. Prophesied for over 60 years during the Assyrian incursions.
• He foretells that a Branch from the stump of Jesse, the Messiah.
• The Spirit of the Lord will be on Him in a special way.
• The Messiah will judge the cause of the poor and the needy with righteous
• The Messiah will bring about a reign of peace that will redeem all of Creation.

Sentence Commuted

Romans 8:1-17 [ESV]

1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
17 and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

TEXT NOTES:
• Paul declares that the penalty of sin has been commuted
• The Law was powerless to save, but God was not.
• Jesus was a sacrificial offering for sin.
• Only those who have the Spirit have life and peace
• Others have their mind set on the flesh which is death
• All of those who have the Spirit will seek to live according to the Spirit
• All who have the Spirit are adopted children of God
• This makes us co- heirs with Jesus Christ of the coming glory

LESSON:
• God does not condemn you, so do not condemn yourself.
